Before and After Getting Your Puppy is a simple, practical guide for anyone bringing a new puppy into the family. In clear steps, with easy-to-follow training deadlines, Dr. Ian Dunbar, who pioneered puppy classes and a loving style of dog training in the 1970s, presents a structured yet playful and humorous plan for raising a wonderful dog.
The guide is based on six developmental deadlines
- Completing owner education and preparation
- Assessing a puppy's prior socialization and education
- Teaching errorless house-training and chew-toy training
- Completing a socialization program of meeting strange dogs and people
- Learning bite inhibition
- A continuing program of ongoing training
In the first half of the book, Dr. Dunbar focuses on what the owner needs to know to select a great puppy. In the second half, he presents the crucial lessons the puppy must be taught during its impressionable early development. Over time, Dr. Dunbar's kind, positive program has been proven the most effective.

SO helpful for crate training, potty training, and getting my dog on a consistent schedule. Information on puppy socialization (meeting 100 people of all ages, genders, and physical attributes), puppy milestones, and exposing your puppy to various sounds, textures, obstacles, moving objects, etc. Also helpful for some basic commands such as sit, down, puppy push-ups, stay, etc. I read this book and Good Owners, Great Dogs before I got my puppy and prior to starting puppy kindergarten. Dr. Dunbar is funny, has a great attitude about dogs and dog misbehavior (it is always the human's fault!), and though many parts of this book are repetitive, repetition aids retention. Highly recommended!Product details

Before and After Getting Your Puppy The Positive Approach to Raising a Happy Healthy and WellBehaved Dog (Audible Audio Edition) Ian Dunbar Michael Page Tantor Audio Books Reviews
This is the best book I have ever read on training yourself and your puppy.A must read reference for every one anticipating getting a puppy. I read and studied this book for a full year before I found the right dog. If you want to raise a dog who is sociable, obedient, and a great lifetime companion, this is the right book. Everything is easy to understand and makes sense and helps you to understand the importance of reaching goals at the right stages of a puppy's life. I have used it to train two puppies and I am very confident in understanding how to raise a successful puppy. My oldest dog is one of the best dogs I have ever known. She is a Westie and they are known for being difficult to train and very stubborn. She is completely obedient and the smartest dog I have ever seen. My current puppy is learning quickly what is expected to do and what he can expect from me. I reread this book before the last puppy and it helped so much. If you are only going to get one book, get this one.
Be sure to get this book before you bring your new puppy home, because your life and the puppies life will be way easier! It had been many years since I had a puppy, but this book made the process trouble-free!
We brought our eight-week old rescue puppy home, and within DAYS, he was potty trained and crate trained for sleeping through the night!
The first few days are critical though, so read the book and get the right supplies before you bring your little one home!
I recommend this book to everyone I know.
Great book very helpful for that new puppy in your home, he believes in feeder ball toys not letting your dog inhale their food.I took on the challenge of two puppies, two months apart, and they are wonderful friends and were very easy to potty train following his advice. Buy the book you'll be glad you did!
I am a long-term dog mom, but try to keep up with training trends. Dr. Dunbar is a veterinarian, a certified animal behaviorist, and one of the best trainers around. This book is a great help to anyone who wants to train a puppy! The only suggestion I would make is not to be afraid of the training - even though Dr. Dunbar reinforces the need to do everything perfectly from the beginning, a few training mistakes are unlikely to "ruin" a perfectly good puppy.
This book is fantastic - Dr. Dunbar is clear and concise with his instructions, and his techniques are strongly rooted in animal behavior science. I'm considering becoming a first time dog owner, and Dr. Dunbar's frankness and honesty were very appreciated, as were his very creative and surprisingly doable training techniques. I feel confident in my decision to get a puppy now, and his instructions/guides have given me a very good idea of what to expect and how to prepare.
In regards to the 1 and 2-star reviews complaining about his tone, which almost scared me away from this book- I suspect those users must have purchased an older version of Dunbar's book.
In the forward to his 2004 version (the hardback edition from ), he credits his new editor with toning down his wording to presumably make it less inflammatory. This is very evident in the first 38 pages of the book, which are very positive and carefully worded when discussing "controversial" training topics.
However, Dunbar's infamously stern tone shines through after the first few chapters, but I honestly didn't mind it at all. He's firm because the welfare of your dog is in your hands and far too many owners don't appreciate that fact, hence the shelters full of poorly raised "problem" dogs. At no point does he cross the line and become some sort of raging dog-training Nazi, as some of the low-rating reviewers seem to suggest. Quite the contrary I found him to be very professional, somewhat irreverent, very credible and quite clever in his training techniques.
Overall, this book is a fantastic read and I highly recommend you pick it up LONG before you even pick your puppy or your breeder, as Dunbar provides some excellent tips on what to look for at that stage.
Ian Dunbar is one of the foremost dog behavior experts. His approach is based on science what techniques for raising puppies have been proven effective. His approach is also designed for those of us who are utterly human our timing is imperfect and we are not 100% consistent -- there are no "don't try this at home" warnings here. With decades of experience as a behaviorist and trainer and informed with a veterinary degree, Dunbar has distilled experience and scientific research into a book that is easy and entertaining. Raise your dog according to the book and you will create what he calls a "bomb-proof" dog. My last two dogs have been raised strictly according to the book. No damage was done to my house (chewing, house-soiling, etc.) by them in their puppy-hood and I have phased out the crate for one (but not the other because she demands to go in it when she wants to relax -- very ideal). Both dogs live with senior dogs that are trained to eliminate on toilet sheets. Despite this, neither dog pees indoors - not at home nor in doggy day care even though many other dogs do so. Please see his website dogstairdaily.com for additional resources. And by the way, he's serious when he cautions training doesn't end at puppy hood, especially not classical conditioning always reward your dog for polite interactions with people and other dogs for the lifetime of the dog.
